Food Rules Friday

Michael Pollan is an acclaimed author and whole food/heathy eating advocate. He is the author of the best selling "In Defense of Food" and "The Omnivore's Dillemma."

Rule #18: "Don't ingest foods made in places where everyone is required to wear a surgical cap."

I've basically agreed with most of these rules, but this one doesn't make any sense to me. There are many products which I have neither the time nor desire to make for myself, and I sincerely hope the people who produce them have their heads covered.

I'm not about to pasteurize my own milk, churn my own butter, or make my own cheese, and I'm thankful that there are health department regulations which require the people who do make them to wear something on their heads to keep hair from getting into the food along with latex gloves and sometimes face masks to prevent getting germs in my food.

Funny and sad!

Don, I also don't want hairs or anything else in the few factory-produced products I do use. I doubt if Pollan wants them either.

The way I interpret his point in this rule, is that, in general, avoiding as many factory-produced products as possible results in a a better diet that results from using fresh whole foods.
