Food Rules Friday

Michael Pollan is an acclaimed author and whole food/heathy eating advocate. He is the author of the best selling "In Defense of Food" and "The Omnivore's Dillemma."

Rule #20: "It's not food if it arrived through the window of your car."

That's an easy one for me to follow, for several reasons.  First, I don't like to use drive-through lanes.  I park and go inside.  Bad enough that I have to contribute to global pollution to drive my car to go places.  I'm not going to sit with my car running waiting in a line, burning fuel and not even moving.  It's also easy to follow this rule because I never ate fast food but very occasionally, because it's clearly not very healthy.  And since going vegetarian a year ago, I don't buy fast food at all.

While I realize he's trying to discourage people from eating unhealthy fast food, not everything purchased at drive-through windows is bad for you. You can get salads, baked potatoes, yogurt, and lots of other good foods from fast food restaurants now.

Like you, I think it's stupid to sit in an idling car for 15 or 20 minutes when you can go inside and get your food in 5 minutes or less, but the most irritating thing to me is trying to talk over those garbled sounding speakers.

It is true that there are a few more choices that are not too unhealthy than there used to be. Before going vegetarian, I found a few choices such as the grilled chicken sandwich at Chik-fil-a and grilled chicken salads from several franchises acceptable to both my palate and health concerns.

On the other hand, it's troubling to me that on the other end of the fast food menus, there seems to be a competition between companies to see who can outdo the others to serve the most enormous, fatty, over-the-top monstrosity of a burger imaginable! Two of the most obscene that I've seen:

*Burger King Triple Whopper Sandwich - 1,310 calories, 88 fat grams
*Wendy’s Baconator Triple - 1,330 calories, 86 fat grams

True, no one is forcing people to buy this stuff. But with a growing epidemic of obesity, I find it socially irresponsible for companies to pander to the peoples' lust for excess.

To all who go to these restaurants and bypass these items to make a healthy choice, Good for You!

Not all fast food is unhealthy, but unfortunately, most of it is.

Great post Vern. I agree with what you say about the fast food outlets trying to outdo each other.

Here in Canada KFC just introduced the double don. I am shocked at the number of people who have tried one so far. It does not appeal to me in the least bit.
